Let me introduce you to Lupita, the goofy, happy alpaca pet in a tiny Peruvian village called Ocra. Besides being adorable and hanging around in the kitchen, she also spits a lot.

From the Salkantay glacier to the jungle... we hiked about 75 km in 4 days to Machu Picchu!

Not quite like the Incas did (we did have proper hiking shoes and sleeping bags), but better than taking the bus up, I’d say.

These are a few impressions from Choachí—our final long-term stop in Colombia, and honestly, our favorite town. Charming streets, local markets, and just enough quiet to feel authentic without being overrun by tourists.

We spent a month at @rbchoachi, where we learned how to make natural laundry detergent from plants and took (very) cold showers under a waterfall. Not the waterfall you see in those pictures though, slightly smaller.

From there, we moved on to @_rancholastresmarias_ , tucked into the lush green hills, where I tried my luck at horseback riding.

These are a few impressions from Choachí—our final long-term stop in Colombia, and honestly, our favorite town. Charming streets, local markets, and just enough quiet to feel authentic without being overrun by tourists.

We had the privilege of staying with a local family in the Putumayo region, right on the border with Ecuador. And while we consider ourselves pretty outdoorsy and experienced campers (in Canada), we were completely humbled by the people we lived with.

It started on day one, when I told the 14-year-old Sofie we were staying with that I was afraid of poisonous animals. Her response was simply: “Why?”

Later that week, I was playing with Sofie in the river when she reached for a vine. I spotted a spider—among the bigger ones I’ve seen—and warned her, “Watch out, there’s a spider!” She flinched at first, then looked at it and said, “Oh, I thought it was a bigger one.”

The kids there were so capable in their environment. When we wanted to go to the river and asked "el mayor" for permission, he said, “Ok, but not without the kids.” The children—ages 8, 12, and 14—were babysitting us.

The family is incredibly inspiring. They’re buying up local farmland around their house and reforesting it. Their mission is to replace the grassland and bring the wildlife back. And it’s working. We saw monkeys in the trees, jaguar prints in the sand, and insects of all shapes and sizes. The meadow you can see in one of the pictures for now still has cows but it will also be forest soon. It’s amazing what just one family can do to make a difference.

Catching up on our travels, I want to share a place with you that was really special to us. We had the pleasure to stay and work remotely at @aldeasabatinga for a bit over 2 months. While we worked full time, we were able to play with bunnies during our lunch break or bring the baby chickens to bed at night.

Stunning frailejones at the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. I kept mixing it up with frijoles (= beans)... learning Spanish ain't easy.

What's fascinating about this plant is that it grows one centimeter per year. So you can see how old they are!!

This will be my last post trying to catch up with my 2024 Europe trip. The pictures are from a Roadtrip in Greece and I took them in October/November.

It's Athens, Naxos, Delphi, Pelion, Mount Olympos, and Meteora all kind of mixed up. So, good luck, you will have to guess which picture was taken where.

A little recap of Italy (last October):

Pictures 1–4: Some impressions from Barolo and another town nearby that I can’t remember the name of.

Pictures 7–8: I am very proud to say I successfully (!!) spent a week in Italy’s top wine and food region as a vegetarian and a teetotaler (apparently that’s the word for not drinking alcohol by choice—thanks, Google). Anyway, very pleased that worked out.

Unexpected snow (who thought it would snow in the mountains??) caught us off guard, forcing us to sprint for the last cable car. In the chaos, Shawn almost fell into a hole in the glacier —thankfully, disaster was avoided! 😅

Pictures 7-10: This time, we stayed overnight in a cozy mountain hut near Göschenen. No snow (thank goodness) —just endless fields of wild blueberries. Honestly, I can’t even remember hiking; we pretty much only ate that day. 🫐✨

What fascinates me most about forests is how tangible change feels. This past summer in Quebec, I walked the same little trail in a forest over and over for two weeks, at least five times a day. Every day, it felt like reading a new chapter of a story: here a mushroom emerged, there a branch had fallen. The forest is like a river—always in motion, never the same—yet it offers a sense of stillness.

This forest, though, is a different one. I didn’t spend much time there, but it was beautiful. It’s near Olten, Switzerland... in case you wondered. I took those pictures in October.

While I’m still catching up on sorting my photos, here’s a little recap of a day trip to Amsterdam back in September.

I realized I sadly took no pictures of Utrecht (where we actually stayed and I lived for 3 years) with my camera. But somehow you never take photos of what's most familiar to you. So Amsterdam will have to do... even though... let's all agree here... Utrecht is undeniably the much nicer city.
